Wool Gloves: What to Look For When Buying, How to Care for and How to Use Them

Fashionable and Functional Wool Gloves, Beanies, Muk Luks, and Sweaters

Hand-knit wool gloves and mittens CAN be fashionably

warm, soft, toasty, and cozy winter accessories for those cold winter days and nights…if they are “quality.”  Wearing the right pair of handmade gloves offers the user the feeling and look of a homemade pair of gloves ( or mittens or glittens). The type of wool and the width of the crocheting make a difference in quality. There are all kinds of gloves made from fabrics. And they are more plentiful than woven gloves. This is due partly to the time-consuming aspect of knitting. Grandma used to knit them in the old days, but today you can give Grandma a rest since they are reasonably priced and readily available online. You can find almost any type of look that strikes your fancy. There is such a  plethora of variations of styles and colors.

.

Although there is a huge variety, it’s best to take your time to find just the right ones for you.  Even better, take some time to learn about where they come from. Think about all the time that it took someone to make them. Or if you are a DIY’er, check this wikiHow article on how to knit your own pair   Just like any other knitting project, the time it takes to knit a pair of gloves or mittens depends on a few things. There is the size of the mittens, the gauge of the yarn, and the complexity of the pattern, which all play a role in how long it will take to finish a pair. Assuming you are using a medium-weight yarn and knitting at a gauge of about 18 stitches per 4 inches, a basic pair of adult-sized gloves/mittens/glittens will take between 4 and 5 hours to complete. If you are using a finer gauge yarn or working on a smaller-size mitten, it will obviously take less time. And if you are using a bulkier yarn or working on a larger size mitten, it will obviously take more time. So, in short, how long it takes to knit a pair of mittens varies depending on the specifics of the project. However, in general, you can expect it to take between 4 and 5 hours to complete a basic pair of adult-sized mittens. Here are some beautiful ones from Nepal

Most places like Etsy and Amazon have them for $20 to $40, but you can get these great ones on eBay for much less. And you can pick  from many variations

This ancient craft of knitting wool items tends to be practiced in regions of the world that have locally available wool and that tend to be undeveloped areas where the cost of living is cheap enough that people can afford to make a living wage producing for the export market.

Wool is a natural fiber that comes from sheep and lends itself very well to being used to make things such as gloves/mittens/glittens as well as hats and sweaters and scarves. Some wool isn't gonna be warm enough And so some people opt for gloves made from certain very warm types of textiles instead.

The best quality wool comes from sheep in New Zealand and Australia, called Merino wool, which comes from Merino sheep, mostly from the mountainous regions of Australia and New Zealand. It's the finest and softest sheep wool with a superior shine and the most luxurious you can find.  The manufacturing process is time-consuming and expensive. The fiber diameter of wool is the single most important factor that determines quality and price. Generally, Merino wool is the highest quality wool because of its fineness which creates a very soft fiber. The finer the wool is, the more valuable it is. Uniformity of the fiber diameter is another factor.

Nepal is well known these days for its tradition of being able to knit different textiles and it's become an established practice to import wool from New Zealand for the commercial production and export of different knit clothing and accessories.

When this caliber of wool is used it’s pretty warm. But it's also become common to line gloves with material for extra warmth such as fleece. This also keeps your hands rubbing against a softer-feeling material. It's also good for a small percentage of the population that has an allergic reaction to wool to avoid having this reaction.

In Afghanistan and Pakistan, they blend their wool with 30% rayon which helps to diminish the allergic reaction that some people have

Knitting is not an exact science. Making gloves and hats and sweaters doesn't lend itself to everyone being the same exact size or design the way other things do.

There are handmade items for sale on eBay,  gloves, earflaps style beanie hats, Glittens / Fingerless Gloves, and mukluks. Please keep in mind that the gloves vary a little bit in size.  But most hands can conform to any of the sizes.   They are available for you to pick colors/pattern, but the sizes are random.

glove sizing is determined by three factors: length, girth, and circumference. The cuff length is the distance around the hand at the wrist. The girth is the thickness of the glove around the hand. The circumference is the distance between the palm and the index finger knuckle. These types of measurements apply to mass-produced textiles like gloves made in places like China. But the needed products like gloves, sweaters and hats can't be profitably manufactured and exported from China because of the increased cost of labor over the last 10 or 20 years.

These products should be washed in cold water by hand and air dried. You can use a mild soap and water solution and store them in a dry climate-controlled place. When you buy your gloves, inquire if they are made with dyes that don't run. If you can find this out it's worth paying more.

If you can find a local store that supplies these it's been to go there so you can try them on and you can feel exactly how soft they are and get a sense of how warm they're going to be when you wear them out.  Anything that you buy on eBay is fully returnable just give us a call or text us or email us
